Peter Marusca is a NYC-born and raised, board-certified nurse practitioner in acute care medicine, oncology, and functional medicine, and the founder of Nonconformist Health and The Prepared Clinician, based in Central New York. With a decade of bedside experience, he has worked with diverse patient populations and delivered high-quality care across acute and complex medical settings. Over time, he came to understand that the phrase “I just don’t feel well” is rarely vague; it is often the earliest signal that something deeper is happening.
Peter earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from CUNY-Hunter College, followed by both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from New York University (NYU). During his academic training, he participated in NYU’s Hartford Institute Geriatric Undergraduate Scholars (HIGUS) Program, contributing to research demonstrating a direct relationship between brain health and heart health. He also served as a mentor to student nurses, newly graduated nurses, and nurse practitioners, helping guide the next generation of clinicians through real-world clinical insight and experience.
Beyond his professional training, Peter is a husband and a father to a child with special needs; roles that have deeply shaped his philosophy of health and care. Navigating both family life and the healthcare system has given him firsthand insight into how fragmented, overwhelming, and emotionally challenging healthcare can be for patients and families. It has also reinforced a central truth: health is not linear, and it rarely follows a predictable path.
His experience at the bedside further highlighted the limitations of a system that often prioritizes symptom management over whole-person care. This gap between lived experience and clinical treatment led him to pursue certification in functional medicine, expanding his ability to evaluate health through a more comprehensive lens that includes physiology, lifestyle, environment, and individual context.
This perspective became the foundation of Nonconformist Health, a virtual functional health platform designed to help individuals move beyond isolated symptoms and toward a more complete understanding of their health. Through personalized consultations and sessions, Peter works with clients to review labs, medications, symptoms, medical history, lifestyle factors, nutrition, and sleep, developing comprehensive, individualized plans aimed at long-term health improvement.
Nonconformist Health is built on the belief that health cannot be siloed within hospitals or doctor’s offices. It is shaped by daily habits, environment, stress, relationships, and life roles, including the realities of being a parent, caregiver, or working professional. Clients not only receive a tailored functioanal health strategy, but also guidance on how to better navigate the healthcare system, ask informed questions, and advocate effectively for themselves in clinical settings.
Peter integrates both conventional and functional medicine principles, ensuring clients receive balanced, evidence-informed education on medications, supplements, preventive screenings, and lifestyle interventions. His approach is not about replacing conventional medicine, but about bridging gaps so individuals can make more informed, confident decisions about their health.
Ultimately, Peter’s mission is to bridge clinical medicine and functional health to help people better understand their bodies, take ownership of their well-being, and navigate their health journey with clarity, confidence, and context.
